Why this scored 1
NASA astrophysics research grant (binary star observation); pure academic research, no facility work.
Award purpose
THE PROPOSAL AIMS TO INVESTIGATE A PECULIAR BINARY STAR SYSTEM WHOSE OBSERVED CHEMICAL AND STELLAR PROPERTIES CANNOT BE EXPLAINED BY CURRENT MODELS OF BINARY EVOLUTION. IT SEEKS TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE SYSTEM S UNSEEN COMPANION IS AN UNUSUALLY MASSIVE WHITE DWARF OR INSTEAD A NEARBY NEUTRON STAR. TO ACCOMPLISH THIS THE INVESTIGATORS REQUEST A 20 KILOSECOND XMM-NEWTON OBSERVATION TO ANALYZE THE SYSTEM S BROADBAND X-RAY AND UV SPECTRAL ENERGY DISTRIBUTION. THE RESULTS WILL PROVIDE CRUCIAL CONSTRAINTS ON THE SYSTEM S NATURE AND EVOLUTION HELPING RESOLVE WHETHER A PAST SUPERNOVA SHAPED ITS ENVIRONMENT.
